The independent electoral and boundaries commission (IEBC) has introduced a backup system to prevent the failure of the electronic transmission of results witnessed during the 2013 general election. This was announced by IEBC chairman Issac Hassan during the launch of the roadmap for the 2017 elections. IEBC announced that in 2017 returning officers in every polling station will be required to scan copies of forms 36 which carry a summary of the results, and upload them on the IEBC website for timely transmission of results. Hassan said the commission is targeting 8 million new voters in a new voter registration exercise to be undertaken across the country from February 15th, this year. The chairman now wants the national treasury to fast track the procurement process for all the resources required for the next polls.
