In 1933, a local resident, Gen Tanaka, donated the land to the City of Tokyo as a park site to promote the welfare of ward residents and improve their lifestyle and culture.
The name "Gyosen Park" was given to the park in honor of the donor, Mr. Gen Tanaka, whose family name was "Gyosen. A nature zoo was opened in 1983. In March 1989, the northern part of the park was completely renovated and the Heisei Garden was opened.
