STORYLINE:
At least two people were killed and 13 others wounded when a large dredger on which they were working in the Suez Canal sunk early on Wednesday, police said.
About 50 people were onboard the dredger, which was being used to drill water from the canal, when it sank around 03:00 local time (00:00 GMT).
"The tube which is connected to the dredger pump exploded and a loud sound was heard, and people thought it was a land mine," said Walid Mohamed, an eyewitness told AP Television News.
One of the workers onboard who was rescued also said the accident occurred because of an explosion in one of the dredger's pumps.
Egyptian state-run television said authorities were still searching for two of the vessel's crew members.
The Canal Authority dredger was working on deepening the canal from 66 feet (20 metres) to 72 feet (23 metres) when it sunk, police said.
Engineers were able to keep the international waterway open by altering the route in which vessels pass through the canal, Egypt's official news agency MENA reported.
