With winter comes the inevitability of frozen brakes. It's not IF your brakes freeze, but WHEN your brakes freeze. This video is designed to walk you through the steps to take to help you release your frozen brakes so that you can get your wheels rolling and get on your way. "We aren't earning if wheels aren't turning!"
So remember...
1. Watch those yellow flags on the tires to make certain the wheels are rolling. You can't always feel the drag if the tires are just sliding on the ice and snow.
2. If the the brakes are frozen then you have to crawl underneath the trailer and beat on the brake drums with a hammer until the brakes release. DO NOT HIT THE BRAKES WITH THE HAMMER AS THIS CAN CAUSE BRAKE DAMAGE AND POSSIBLE BRAKE FAILURE.
3. If the brakes fail to release, then there is the possibility that the lines have ice in them. Pour some line antifreeze into the red emergency glad hand, put air to the tire and give it a few minutes. Let the antifreeze do its job and thaw out the ice. Hopefully this will solve the issue.
4. Try to avoid engaging the trailer brakes when at all possible when you are stops for short periods of time, such as a rest area or shipper. If you must engage your brakes, then let them sit for a few minutes to cool everything down. This will help prevent the possibility of the brakes freezing.
I hope that these tips help you to release frozen brakes and not get stranded somewhere waiting on spring to come and warm up the brakes!!
