It helped me a lot when I first learned it.
Anyone that has swam the 200 backstroke knows the importance of the legs on this stroke. On this video we will talk about the kicking technique while swimming backstroke and how to improve it.
Many backstrokers are good at underwater dolphin kick, but we have covered that in earlier videos. It is very important, however, to keep a fast flutter kick in the back after using your legs very intensely underwater. This is why backstrokers need to have powerful resistant legs. If you don’t kick effectively during backstroke the legs will sink and you will have a hard time moving forward.
So how do we train backstroke kick? my favorite way of kicking on my back is like this. I like to kick with my hands sticking out of the water because it gives me a sense of how well my body is floating. To build stamina we do several hundred yards divided in fast intervals. Let’s say 5 x 100s fast resting only 10 seconds. Next time we do it maybe a week later we rest 7 seconds then the next week 5 seconds rest and finally we end up doing the 5x100s fast kick with only 3 seconds rest in between. This way your legs build endurance while you learn to recover faster and faster.
Now there is still one part of the backstroke kick that you will need to master to swim fast. As I have mentioned before, the rotation of the body in backstroke is very important. So what happens to the legs while you rotate? well they rotate with the whole body as well while continuing the fast kick. This is probably the most complicated part of the stroke. So to build muscle memory you need to practice this. Grab the edge of the pool and practice kicking while rotating. Do this several times until you feel that you can do it right. Then, put your arms by your side and kick while rotating. These drills are extremely helpful for a good backstroke swimming technique and if you want to swim more effectively I recommend doing these often.
