Queen Tina Turner, Magnetic Singer of Explosive Power, Is Dead at 83
Tina Turner, the exuberant, heel-stomping, wild-haired rock goddess who sold out stadiums, earned a dozen Grammy Awards, and won the adoration of fans around the world during a five-decade music career, died at her home near Zurich on Wednesday after a lengthy illness, according to her publicist.
83 years old.
Turner's publicist, Bernard Doherty, said in a statement, "The world has lost a musical icon and a role model with her passing." Doherty added that close relatives and friends will be invited to a private funeral service. The cause of demise was not specified.
Turner's high-flying but turbulent existence was the stuff of music industry legend, as well as a best-selling 1986 autobiography ("I, Tina"), a Hollywood biopic ("What's Love Got to Do With It"), and a Broadway jukebox musical ("Tina: The Tina Turner Musical").She ascended from rural origins to the pinnacle of national prominence, exploding into the public consciousness as one half of the sensational rhythm-and-blues duo Ike & Tina Turner and later establishing herself as one of the world's most popular Black female solo artists.
She was the first woman and the first Black artist to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone, in the magazine's second issue, and her enormously successful solo career broke barriers for future generations of Black women in the music industry.
But along the road, Turner encountered personal turmoil and private tragedies. She claimed that her ex-husband and artistic collaborator, Ike Turner, subjected her to years of horrific physical violence and attempted to exert control over almost every aspect of her life.
"The source of my greatest unhappiness was my relationship with Ike. Initially, I was head over heels for him. Look at what he did for me! "But he was completely unpredictable," Turner wrote in "I, Tina," a memoir co-written by music critic and MTV News correspondent Kurt Loder and Turner.
Turner successfully divorced her spouse in the late 1970s and embarked on a solo career. Turner accomplished one of the most successful comebacks in modern rock music during the 1980s by redefining herself as a joyfully liberated Billboard number-one hitmaker.Turner, an immensely talented vocalist who belted out songs with abandon, recorded one chart-topping song after another in the '80s, but one track in particular made her a superstar: "What's Love Got to Do With It," a show-stopping anthem from her 1984 album "Private Dancer."
Turner's other major successes of the era were "Better Be Good to Me," "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)," "Typical Male," "The Best," and "I Don't Want to Fight."
In the decades that followed, she traversed the globe, won numerous awards, occasionally appeared in films, and remained one of the most recognizable musical figures of the 20th century. After her 50th anniversary tour concluded in 2009, she resolved to retire.
Turner told an audience of 75,000 at Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich, Switzerland, in that year, "I've done enough." "I have performed for the past 44 years. I really ought to put away my dancing shoes."
Turner won eight competitive Grammy Awards, three Grammy Hall of Fame awards, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, first with Ike Turner in 1991 and later as a solo artist in 2021.
