Padua (Padova) is a charming small city in Veneto region, northern Italy, located on the River Bacchiglione, about 40 kilometers west of Venice. It is the capital of the province of Padua and an economic and communications hub of the area. According to legend, Padua was founded by the Trojan hero Antenor and it was first mentioned in 302 BCE. In the 11th–13th century, Padua was a prosperous Italian commune. From 1318 to 1405 it was governed by the Carrara family and then, it passed to Venice. Between 1815 and 1866 Padua was under Austrian dominion. Padua is home to the second-oldest university in Italy and it is one of the main Italian art cities.
St. Anthony of Padua (Sant’Antonio da Padova), the patron saint of the city, who spent part of his life in the city, was buried there in 1231. St. Anthony of Padua (original name Fernando Martins de Bulhões) was born in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal and died June 13, 1231 in Arcella, Verona, Italy. The Saint was canonized in 1232 and the feast day is June 13. St. Anthony of Padua is known as Franciscan friar, doctor of the church, and patron of the poor and he is invoked for the return of lost property.
The Italian poet, writer and philosopher Dante Alighieri known simply as Dante (1265 – 14 September 1321) lived in Padua.
Padua has the most ancient Botanical Garden in the world, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. And, also, the 14th-century Frescoes, inside of different buildings in the city centre are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
With its beautiful historical centre, many piazzas, churches, and its rich history, Padua is a popular tourist destination.
The Pontifical Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua contains the tomb of the saint and has statues and reliefs by Donatello on the high altar. The construction of the Basilica begun in 1232, one year after the death of St. Anthony, and it was completed in 1310. The Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua is a well-known place of pilgrimage for many people from all over the world.
