Restylane Refyne and Defyne are 2 of the newest fillers to receive FDA approval in the U.S. and they’ve quickly become favorites among our doctors.
Like most of the dermal fillers on the market today, they are made of hyaluronic acid, a molecul that naturally occurs in our skin and tends to disappear as we age. Hyaluronic acid holds onto water, helping to keep skin moisturized (read: smooth and plump and resilient to wrinkles). That’s why using hyaluronic acid to restore what damage aging has done OR to tweak a feature on your face (or hands, neck, decollete) makes total sense. It’s a natural look because you’re adding more of a naturally-occuring substance.
But here’s where it can go wrong: too much filler or filler of the wrong consistency or filler placed in the wrong layer or spot in the face can create a weird, distorted look.
Refyne and Defyne have become so popular because they are a different consistency than the other fillers that have been around longer. They are tiny droplets of gel, so you get the naturalness of tiny microdroplets that blend in with the surrounding tissues and offer a smooth look, with the resiliency of a gel. Because our faces are always moving, a gel consistency allows for the filler to flex and stretch and move with the face, but not be broken down as quickly as a traditional formula. That gives a more natural and longer-lasting result.
Refyne and Defyne are very similar, but they do have some differences.
Defyne is meant more for changing contours. It’s firmer and provides structure to it’s results.
Refyne is meant more for smoothing out lines and creating subtle changes. Refyne offers more flexion, so it’s preferred for closer to the surface injections and high-movement areas, like the lips.
Defyne is more likely to be used for jawline contouring.
