Crossing the Simpson Desert from West To East from Mt Dare to Birdsville in June 2021. The experience was just magic crossing some 1000 sand dunes travelling 611 kilometres and taking 6 days and camping 5 nights, one at Dalhousie Springs and the rest in the desert amongst the dunes. The route we took included the French Line, the Rigg Road, Knolls track and the QAA Line. We towed relatively light camper trailers and with tyre pressures around 15 psi for most of the trip we didn't have any problems travelling west to east and no recoveries were needed.
Highlights were swimming at Dalhousie Springs in the hot spring water, the red sand dunes, bright stars, dingos, birds, wild flowers, some rain in the desert, Big Red and the driving itself. We arrived in Birdsville to find all roads closed due to the recent rain, and had to stay there a few nights until the roads were open. Good times with a great bunch of people, Bill, Debbie, Craig, Nat and Susan. Some travel and vehicle statistics below -
