Bangladesh: Protesters Set State TV HQ On Fire, Internet Shut; At Least 32 Killed
Anti-quota protests continue to rock Bangladesh. The death toll due to violent demonstrations has risen to at least 32. On July 18, protesters torched state media broadcaster BTV's headquarters in Dhaka. The protesters stormed the BTV’s premises and torched dozens of vehicles. Bangladesh authorities have shut down internet services to curb key communication tools for protest organisers. Protests continue in Bangladesh despite PM Sheikh Hasina’s calls for calm. Bangladesh students are protesting against quotas in government jobs. The recent protests were triggered by a Dhaka high court ruling that reinstated a 30% job quota for families of 1971 war heroes. The quota was scrapped by the Hasina government in 2018. Hasina's government has challenged the ruling in the Supreme Court. However, it has refused to scrap job quotas, saying the matter is pending in the court. The Supreme Court scrapped the High Court order pending the hearing of the government's appeal on August 7.
