Ashok Roy (1936-2007) was born in Dehra Dun into a family of musicians with a rich musical heritage and started training on sarod with his father Anant Kumar Roy at the age of 5. Anant Kumar Roy who established the Dehra Dun Academy of Music was himself a disciple of Ustad Alauddin Khan. At fifteen, Ashok Roy became the disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and at seventeen, he won the Best Musicians Award in the All-India Radio Music Completion (along with Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma), thus launching his performing career. At 22, he joined All-Inida Radio (A.I.R.) as an A grade artist and worked alongside such legends as Pandit Ravi Shankar, Emni Shankar Sastri and Pannalal Ghosh. He was featured in national programs of A.I.R. and Indian television, and performed in all the major music festival in India, and toured internationally throughout Europe, Asia and Australiasia.
