STORYLINE:
Britain shattered its record for highest temperature ever registered Tuesday amid a heat wave that has seared swaths of Europe - and the national weather forecaster predicted it would get hotter still in a country ill prepared for such extremes.
Tourists were trying to keep cool in London on Tuesday as figures from the Met Office recorded 40.2 degrees Celsius (104.4 degrees Fahrenheit) at Heathrow.
The nation was urged to restrict travel and stay at home so many businesses were closed.
Even the guards outside Buckingham Palace had to retreat from the heat.
At Trafalgar Square, tourists dipped their feet in fountains and enjoyed the cool spray.
Before Tuesday, the highest temperature recorded in Britain was 38.7 C (101.7 F), set in 2019.
