European scientists have revived a 48,500-year-old ‘Zombie Virus’ buried under a frozen lake in Russia's Siberian permafrost. One of these viruses, Pandoravirus yedoma, found frozen under a lake, is more than 48,500 years old. All these viruses are capable of infecting single-cell organisms such as amoebas — but not plants or animals. However, other frozen viruses could be very dangerous to plant and animal life, including humans. Climate Change and Global warming is irrevocably thawing enormous swathes of permafrost. Scientists have long warned that this could potentially revive deadly dormant pathogens, especially because of increased human activities in the region.
