STORYLINE:
About a thousand refugees and migrants were early on Thursday spending the night in a chilly field in Slovenia, right accross the country's unmanned border crossing with Croatia.
They were earlier transported by train to the Croatian side of the border and left to cross the frontier on foot.
Slovenian police and soldiers rounded up the group, including children and elderly people, into a corn field beside the Sutla river, but with all reception camps in the area full to capacity they had no alternative but to have them spend the night in the open.
A police helicopter with a searchlight flew overhead to assist any migrants who may have become lost in the unfamiliar terrain.
More than 21,500 people have crossed that frontier in the five days since Hungary - the previous favoured EU entry point for migrants crossing the Balkans - closed its borders with Croatia and forced the human tide further west into Slovenia.
This Alpine country of barely two (m) million says it cannot cope with the volume of human traffic and is appealing for EU financial and security aid.
