Malaysia's harrowing ordeal with the Covid-19 pandemic was the beginning of a nightmare for some. However, deep in the laboratories at the Institute of Medical Research Malaysia, a team of scientists led by Dr T Ravindran shared a brief moment of excitement as their locally-produced testing reagent successfully detected Malaysia's first infections.
The team of scientists got to work immediately when they received the necessary information required in order to develop the reagent, used in RT-PCR tests to detect Covid-19 infections. Within 10 days of starting work, they began testing samples.
Malaysia detected its first cases of Covid 19 on 25 January 2020.
