The Challenge for some of us gardeners, is we don't own a grow light set up, we don't have a greenhouse, and absolutely no Easterly or South Facing windows! What to do? Typically you are forced to go buy starts, but I wanted a more affordable option. Late 2017 I stumbled upon winter sowing. Then I read up on direct winter sowing. I tried direct winter sowing last year with my tomatoes and had 100% success, so I decided this year I would expand my direct winter sowing with my hardy herbs and flowers. Today I planted, cumin, sage, oregano, parsley, St. Johns Wort, and poppies.
If you are interested just read the back of the package and look for key words like hardy, transplant in early spring. Those will give you tips on what you can so early using this method in northern climates. Get creative and experiment. Even if it doesn't work for everything you will find what works for you and your garden environment.
