Was Your Car Towed?
If you’ve ever been stranded on the side of the road, a tow truck driver might look like your Knight in Shining Armor. But if he’s towing you from your apartment complex, or while you’re out at lunch with friends, he may not be the hero you’re looking for.
In this week’s episode, we’re talking about what to do if your car is towed, and your rights as a California driver.
If you live in Sacramento, you know that parking isn’t always easy. Load zone here, tow zone there. It’s like they want us to carpool or something.
But if you do walk out to your car, only to find an empty space, here are three things to remember:
Look for the signs. Property owners must post signs at all entrances and exits with the name and phone number of the towing company. And the company must be available around the clock 7 days a week to arrange the release of your car.
If you catch the tow in action, and they’re not yet on a public road, they have to release your car upon request. But they are entitled to ask for half of their normal towing fee.
A towing company cannot force you to pay in cash, and they must accept all major credit cards. If you do pay in cash, they must have enough money on hand to make change.
And here’s a bonus tip: Towing companies also can’t take your car more than 10 miles from where you were towed. That one’s for free.
And if you think you were towed wrongfully, contact your local law enforcement agency and file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau at bbb.org.
