STORYLINE
President Bush pledged on Monday to help Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan fight Kurdish rebels, declaring them "an enemy of Turkey, a free Iraq and the United States."
In an Oval Office session, Bush offered intelligence sharing to help combat separatists guerilla fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.
Bush also said top military figures from the United States and Turkey would be in more regular contact in an effort to track the movement of the fighters.
Following the meeting, Bush said in a joint press conference in the White House that he understood how problematic the situation was for Turkey.
"What the Turkish people need to come away from this meeting is that one the Prime Minister impressed upon me the seriousness of the problem and I understand it, two, he expects there to be action and I agree, and he's taken some steps along those lines," he said.
The skirmishes were the latest in a conflict that has seen nearly 40,000 people killed.
