Original airdate: 7/22/2016 | At most jobs, getting high will get you fired. But when painting a 620-foot tower, it's a job requirement.
Aaron Livingston and Keith Perry are two 25-year-old cloud dwellers with Skyline Tower Painting. They're part of the team WFMZ hired to paint our very high TV tower.
They said they can feel the tower sway, when they're perched at the top.
"It's awesome," they said.
But touching the sky is a process of attached cables, harnesses, agility and a steel stomach.
The pair said they don't really get butterflies anymore.
"This is relatively safe compared to what I do for fun." Livingston said.
The pair are both rock climbers, and those skills come in handy when spraying 260 gallons of specialized paint 620 feet above the ground.
"I like it because we get to travel all over the United States," owner Chris Mecklem said.
Back on earth, the crew, lead by Mecklem, live in a camper as they crisscross the country, working nine months a year.
Jobs can take a day or in this case two weeks. The work space can be over 1,000 feet high with some pretty unique co-workers.
"I think it's really nice to see vultures just hovering by," Perry said. "You can see right into their eyes."
"Do you guys have a playlist you listen to up there?" I asked.
Mecklem said over the past several years insurance rates have skyrocketed due to how dangerous the job is. He does point out that in eight years his outfit has never had a fall or incident.
