According to the American College of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist recommendation a girl should visit the dentist at the age of 13 to 15 once they achieve menarche. This is the time they can meet the gynaecologist and discuss their problems. Once they go to a gynaecologist we take a detailed history of their physical health, any problems regarding their menstrual cycle, the menstrual cycle pattern, any irregularity, because this is the stage when a girl’s body is undergoing tremendous hormonal changes and lots of physical changes happens in their body. So they are very disturbed and curious. If any irregularity we can treat them and we do the complete physical examination, assess the general nutritional status. If they are anaemic we treat them accordingly. The internal examination or the pelvic examination is not recommended at this stage. We can guide them and is they have any problem they can discuss their problems. If a girl is anaemic or having irregular cycles or suffering from severe dysmenorrhea or too much of bleeding we subject them to further investigation like complete blood count, thyroid profile, the bleeding time and clotting time as well as ultrasound abdomen and pelvis. Then we treat them accordingly. We also treat them about the importance of improving the physical and personal hygiene as well as good nutritional status. We give them emphasis about including the physical exercise in their day to day lifestyle. With all these efforts the girl will develop a personal bonding with the gynaecologist, seek and discuss her problems freely. At this time only we are treating and guiding them about the safe sex as well as ways to prevent sexually transmitted disease as well as avoiding the teenage pregnancy. One of the most important reason for selecting this age group is that we can counsel the girl and the parent for the need of the cervical cancer vaccine so that we can prevent them from the dreaded cancer of the female body by just giving 3 doses of injection against the cervical cancer.
