In Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, there's a technique called the Backwards Long Jump that allows you to do some crazy things, most notably Mario can zip all the way up the "endless" stairs to the final Bowser encounter without the required 70 stars. It's not even all that difficult to do, and if you mess it up, you can easily try again.
This glitch works because there is no upper limit on Mario's backward velocity while long jumping, so in theory, this glitch can be abused to sequence break in many, many locations.
But for the purpose of demonstration, I've decided to showcase the BLJ where it's most commonly used. Here's a short Mario 64 Backwards Long Jump Tutorial:
Run part way up the infinite stairs and turn around, then begin running back down the stairs. Perform a long jump down the stairs, then immediately hold the opposite direction on the joystick (while still holding the Z button). Mario will reverse his momentum in midair, and land back on the stairs. As soon as he lands, begin mashing the A button to repeatedly jump, and if your timing is right, Mario will begin long jumping backwards rapidly. Continue to hold the backwards direction on the joystick AND hold the Z button while mashing A, and Mario will zip all the way to the top of the "endless" stairs.
I usually set this up so that Mario is running toward the camera/screen. So hold down on the joystick to run toward the screen down the stairs, hold Z then hit A to long jump forward, then hold up on the joystick while still holding Z. Then begin mashing the A button.
Take THAT, stairs!
Note that if Mario performs the BLJ and is angled into the left wall of the infinite stairs, you may end up somewhere in Wet Dry World.
This Backwards Long Jump glitch can also be used on the stairs in front of the door that leads to the Tick Tock Clock area. Normally, you would need 50 Stars in order to open the door, but if you perform the BLJ trick on the stairs in front of that doorway, you can zip right through the door and into the Tick Tock Clock area of Peach's Castle.
The backwards long jump isn't just one of the most infamous glitches in Mario 64, but one of the most famous glitches in all of speedrunning. Here's some more information on the Mario 64 BLJ - [ Ссылка ]
