The Saab Bofors Dynamics AT4 is an 84mm unguided anti-armour weapon.
India has entered into a contract with the Swedish business Saab Group.
The Saab Group has released a statement confirming that it has been awarded the contract to provide AT-4 weapons to the Indian Armed Forces.
How Dangerous Is AT4 Anti Tank Weapon?
The AT4 is capable of attacking tanks and combat vehicles, as well as landing craft, helicopters, planes, and armoured vehicles.
The weapon can also be employed to protect essential assets, permanent defence sites, and critical supply points.
Many countries, including Argentina, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and Greece, deployed the weapon in their artillery.
Carl Gustav's design elements were heavily incorporated into the weapon. Because the weapon is recoilless, the force applied backwards from the launcher is minimal. In such a case, the AT-4 can launch the weapon even from a small room, whereas its competitor Carl Gustav Launcher is quite powerful. As a result, firing it from a closed room can be dangerous. In urban areas, the AT-4 weapon is very effective at breaking down a wall or targeting a building. The weapon also has an optical night sight.
The AT4 warhead is capable of penetrating more than 17.5 inches of armour plate. The weapon has a minimum arming distance of 10m, allowing it to target short-range targets more accurately.
The AT4 is a one-shot weapon that can fire a variety of projectiles, including HEAT (high-explosive anti-tank), AST (anti-structure tandem-warheads), ER (extended range), HE (high explosive), HP (high penetration), and RS (reduced sensitivity). The high-explosive anti-tank projectile is capable of penetrating rolled homogeneous armour as thick as 420mm.
The weapon generates a significant backblast behind it, which may endanger the weapon's user as well as allied forces in the area. To address the backblast issue, a new version known as AT4-CS (confined space) was designed to precisely satisfy urban warfare needs. AT4-CS employs a saltwater countermass to absorb backblast and reduce the pressure wave.
The AT-4 weapon weighs around 8 kg. The shell fired through it travels at a pace of 220 metres per second. The range of the AT-4 anti-tank weapon is 200 to 500 metres.
