After a relatively brief period of teasing, sim racing peripheral manufacturer
Fanatec has taken the covers off its new Direct Drive wheel base. It goes by the name of CSL DD and it is, as anticipated, a brand-new, entry level direct drive wheel base at a third of the price of existing offerings such as the Fanatec Podium DD range, Simucube 2 Pro or Accuforce Pro. Meaning, this is the cheapest, budget direct drive wheelbase ever!

Direct Drive can be very expensive. Up until now, if you wanted a direct drive wheel, Fanatec’s own Podium range started at $1,000. The new CSL DD comes in at a fraction of that, at $349.99. Meaning the CSL DD will be a cheap direct drive wheel base.

The motor itself provides up to 5Nm of torque on the standard power supply, but this can rise to 8Nm with the optional Boost Kit 180. This may not seem like a lot, however, with a "direct" connection to the motor, Direct Drive is known to provide much more detail at lower forces. The lower forces means that this direct drive wheel can be mounted to pretty much any cockpit - or even a very sturdy desk without much worry.

You’ll be able to buy the CSL DD base later this year, with shipping anticipated in the third quarter of 2021. It’ll come in at $349.99/€349.99, and A$599.90 for players in Australia — UK pricing isn’t available at the moment. Although historically - Fanatec have kept the prices very similar throughout all currencies.

The CSL DD release date is still unknown, but is said to start shipping in the third quarter of 2021. Could this be the best direct drive wheel available? It certainly seems as though it would be the go-to direct drive wheel for anyone on a budget.
