To kick off 2024, we're at the Severn Valley Railway Winter Steam Gala to bid farewell to the sole surviving LMS Ivatt 4 Class 'Flying Pig' 43106 as she embarks her final day in service before withdrawal after having 14 years worth of running. However, it is unfortunately as of writing this, it is unknown what the future holds for this unique locomotive or when she will be overhauled so we may sadly not see her in steam for a very long time!
Also bidding farewell at the gala was Bulleid Pacific 34027 Taw Valley on her last day in service before withdrawal for overhaul to which it is hoped that we will see her again in the not too distant future.
With two farewells brought one new beginning, the gala debut of LMS Stanier Mogul 2968 making it's first gala appearance for the first time since 2012 after returning from a long overhaul back last year in 2023 and running in LMS unlined black before being painted in LMS lined black and running as 13268.
Locos appearing in this video include:
Flying Pig 43106 - On her final day before withdrawal
7812 Erlestoke Manor
Stanier Mogul 2968 - Making her first gala appearance since overhaul
34027 Taw Valley - On her final before withdrawal for overhaul
Std 4 75069
GWR Pannier 7714 does not feature in this video
This gala was planned to feature guest loco USATC S160 2253 Omaha but unfortunately due to yet another failure she was withdrawn from the event.
This gala certainly proved to be more of a challenge for locations than usual with all locos except 7812 facing towards Kidderminster, not being able to get in the field at Little Rock with the farmer to ask if whether you can go in the field being asleep when we arrived so we had to use what we could and then annoyingly in the last shot of 43106 at Northwood some idiot on an overly loud lawn mower thing which echoed loudly all over the valley messing around in a field unfortunately ruined the audio and the vibration of the train making the camera shake and for some reason move up and down as it passes making it, not the best to watch. This is still an issue I am trying to fix on my tripod.
But overall another great gala from the SVR and we certainly look forward to our next visit there and we also hope 43106 can return as soon as she can, she will certainly be missed!
