Halifax Psychologist Brad Peters talks about what therapy is (and is not).
It is fair to say that many clients do not know what they are looking for. Some say that they want advice or strategies... others say they need skills or tools to better cope with anxiety, depression, or some relationship problem.
Yet when therapy is offering the greatest payouts, it does very little of the above. Brad tends to characterize these approaches as typically offering mild to moderate symptom relief through strategic coping.
That is because these methods rely heavily on explicit tactics, while most people are actually 'stuck' in some aspect of their life due to causes that are implicit, or operating just outside of one's awareness.
Not all therapy sessions are stellar or life-altering. But in the really good ones, the client does not walk out thinking "now I know something I didn't before," or "now I have a strategy I can put to action" ... they instead leave feeling moved or enlightened, in a way that opens them up to new possibilities, or new ways of experiencing themselves or the world.
