‘Tis the season to be jolly and while we’re sure you can't wait to connect with your loved ones over the holidays, please ensure you also stay alert.
This season is a popular time for cyber criminals. Action Fraud UK suggests that during last year’s holiday season, 28,000 people in UK reported losing a total of £15.4m to online shopping scams. £2.2m was lost to holiday fraudsters, ruining those magical moments for so many.
If you fall for a scam, it can affect those who are connected to you. Apart from stealing money, some recent scams have spread from one infected device to others on the contact list – exposing your friends and family too.
Here are a few tips to help you stay safe:
• Criminals are experts at impersonating people and well-known companies. Fake messages can be difficult to spot and criminals put in a lot of effort to make their communication look legitimate so it’s important to take your time and not act too quickly.
• Before you click, download, return a call, or grab a deal – stop and think. Use known and verified contacts to confirm before you act. And remember,
• If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.
