Perhaps there is no denying that the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a British relic, plagues our postcolonial liberal democratic system. Historically, this regulation would result in imprisonment for anyone who spoke out against the coloniser's rule. But despite our agreement to be a democracy that upholds the values of liberty and tolerance and our 75-year independence from our colonial masters, our state still prioritises legislation that stifles any divergent viewpoints.
