Flexibility training is basically useless on its own. So many functional fitness programs place a heavy emphasis on mobility and flexibility, making people spend hours on useless static passive stretching exercises. These result in passive, useless flexibility and are a waste of time. It's true that you need SOME flexibility, but how much do you really NEED? How about working to get enough flexibility to perform the activities of your daily life and hobbies, and then allowing yourself to spend the rest of your exercise time doing something more valuable, like focusing on muscular strength, endurance, balance, athleticism, speed, agility, quickness, and motor control? There are many more high-value activities, which can still increase flexibility, but also give you the added benefit of strength and control. Yoga is a system of mostly passive stretching, and even power yoga classes rely on deep hypermobility and end-range flexibility without neuromuscular control to back it up. Yoga can be so much more functional if we focus on controlling our ACTIVE range of motion, rather than our passive range of motion.
