What makes someone Jewish? Is it self-identification alone, or is more required?
There are many misunderstandings and conflicting information. The answer to the question "Who is Jewish?" is very simple. It is either one who is born Jewish or one who properly converts.
Claims of self-identification as Jewish, however sincere they may be, are not legitimate without the proper lineage or conversion. Although some groups say otherwise, they and their statements are not legitimate according to the Torah's true tradition.
Conversion to Judaism is the path for someone not born Jewish to become Jewish and join the Jewish People. Interestingly, we've seen many comments saying that they heard conversion to Judaism was not possible. Statements like these would puzzle the average Jew, as conversion is a known concept. But throughout much of history as Jewish lived in Christian and Muslim countries. Leaving Christianity or Islam was outlawed by their respective countries, and conversion to Judaism was simply not done due to the great danger rabbis and communities would face in doing so.
The truth stands that conversion is possible. But the current state of affairs in the world still does not make it simple. On the one hand, there are non-Torah-observant groups that perform conversions. Although there is even an opinion of a self-conversion in the Talmud, in these days, any conversion not performed by a small group of well-recognized organizations will not be accepted in Torah-observant Jewish communities. On the other hand, conversions performed by well-accepted Torah observant groups are often very intensive processes, many times uprooting the potential converts from their location and livelihood. Furthermore, this conversion is virtually impossible in many parts of the world. The situation is not simple, but is conversion really necessary?
There are many people in the world who simply wish to enjoy the Wisdom of Judaism without conversion. The Talmud tells us any Gentile who is well versed in the Torah relevant to them deserves respect given to the Jewish High Priest.
Conversion is not required for a majority of people who simply wish to develop a closer connection to the Creator and live a life of faith. For those who want more and feel attached to the Torah and the Jewish people so much that they would change their life radically to fulfill this desire, a proper conversion is a viable option.
Tune in for daily food-for-the soul. There is One Above who created and maintains the world, and we are here on Earth to find ourselves and find our true place in the Creator's plan.
