HS2’s Burton Green Tunnel in Warwickshire has reached the halfway mark. Join us for an exclusive look inside this impressive 700-meter structure as construction continues.
Once completed, this tunnel will allow HS2 trains to pass beneath the village of Burton Green, near Kenilworth, with a landscaped green space above for community use.
Built using a “top-down” construction approach, the project began at ground level by installing the side walls and roof first, leaving large openings to facilitate excavation. The tunnel is then dug out, and the base is constructed underneath.
In the past year, work has accelerated, with the southern 200-meter portal entrance completed, along with major underground structures, including retaining walls and over 1,300 piles, which required 33,000 cubic meters of concrete.
The next phase focuses on completing further excavation, reusing excavated soil for landscaping, and installing roof slabs, base slabs, and internal structures to prepare for the tunnel’s full opening in Autumn 2026.
A highlight of the project for the local community is the restoration of the Kenilworth Greenway, a popular path for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders, linking Balsall Common to Kenilworth. Once finished, the Greenway will be realigned to cross over the tunnel, preserving its original route through the area.
