IGPP is pleased to share its Winter 2023 Seminar Series presentation featuring School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW Sydney's Sahani Pathiraja. Dr. Pathiraja's talk, "Topics in Data Assimilation with Applications in Hydrology" was presented January 24, 2023.
Abstract: Data assimilation has and continues to play an important role in earth system forecasting and reanalysis. It provides the tools to optimally combine various sources of data and prior knowledge, usually in the form of numerical models, based on their respective uncertainties. An effective application of data assimilation methods requires accurate quantification of the uncertainty in both data and model outputs, which is generally a challenging task. In this talk I will present research related to 1) improved data assimilation methods that aim to accurately and efficiently account for non-linearities in system dynamics and non-Gaussian uncertainties and 2) methods for quantifying model uncertainty in data assimilation, particularly when the fundamental system properties (e.g. land cover) which are usually assumed constant in hydrologic models, are allowed to vary in time.
