5. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Jay Inslee, D-Washington:
“We are here to proclaim very vocally and very forcefully that we will not allow any state or any Trump appointed judge to jeopardize a woman's right of choice in the state of Washington.”
6. Wide of bill signing
ANNOTATION:
The new laws come as abortions and gender-affirming medical care have been banned in Republican-led states, including neighboring Idaho.
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Maya Morales, Washington People’s Privacy:
“You know, it's so important for states that can protect access to care to do so. And we're really proud that Washington state has done that, because it's very clear that people are going to need to travel for care. Some people may even have to move. I mean, the level of hostility that we're seeing around the United States in this kind of culture war against trans people is horrifying. And I'm really, really proud of all of our lawmakers and our governor and our attorney general for making sure that that care is protected here.”
8. Bill signing, people clapping
STORYLINE:
Washington state has enacted legal protections for people who travel there seeking reproductive and gender-affirming medical care.
Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee signed the bill into law Thursday as part of a package of health care bills. The law protects patients and providers.
It comes as abortions and gender-affirming medical care have been banned in Republican-led states, including neighboring Idaho.
A bill sponsor says the “shield law” tells other states they will not be able to use Washington state courts or judicial processes to enforce their restrictive laws.
Inslee also signed a law increasing consumer protections related to health data and another shielding health care providers from disciplinary action related to abortions and gender-affirming care.
