The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28th, gave the green light for the development of 12 new industrial smart cities across 10 states, with an investment of Rs 28,602 crore. So, what does this mean for you and the country?
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw laid it out clearly that these cities will be spread along six key industrial corridors, including the Amritsar-Kolkata, Delhi-Mumbai, Vizag-Chennai, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Nagpur and Chennai-Bengaluru corridors. Now these aren't just random locations, they're part of a strategic plan to create a 'necklace' of industrial hubs that wrap around the country, all connected by the Golden Quadrilateral.
But what’s really exciting is the job potential. Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that these smart cities could create up to 1 million direct jobs and an additional 3 million indirect jobs.
Designed to foster a vibrant industrial ecosystem, these projects aim to achieve $2 trillion in exports by 2030. National Industrial Corridor Development Programme is an initiative that seeks to attract investments from both large anchor industries and MSMEs. These industrial nodes will act as catalysts for boosting exports, thereby reinforcing India's position in the Global Value Chains.
The new industrial cities will be developed as greenfield smart cities of global standards, built 'ahead of demand' on the 'plug-n-play' and 'walk-to-work' concepts. The government’s approach ensures these cities will be equipped with advanced infrastructure that supports the seamless movement of people, goods, and services.
From Khurpia in Uttarakhand to Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan, these cities will be dotted across the map, each with its own industrial specialization. They’ll have all the modern conveniences—24-hour power, advanced telecom, efficient waste management, and seamless connectivity to railways, highways, and airports.
So this isn't just about building cities; it's about creating vibrant, livable communities that are also economic powerhouses. With an eye on sustainability and minimal environmental impact, these projects are poised to not just transform India's industrial landscape but to set a new global standard.
