The tribe Haeterini is confined exclusively to the neotropical region. All members of this tribe are elusive crepuscular butterflies which spend their lives skulking deep in the undergrowth. There are 5 genera - Pierella, Pseudohaetera, Cithaerias, Dulcedo and Haetera. All butterflies in the latter 4 genera have rounded transparent wings, with small ocelli at the apex of the hindwings.
The genus Haetera comprises of 2 species - macleannania and piera. Both are extremely similar, but macleannania has a reddish flush on the hindwings, while in piera this is amber in colour.
Haetera macleannania is found from Costa Rica to Colombia, and is replaced further south by piera which is found in Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
05. Rhetus periander
Butterflies in the genus Rhetus are noted for their short palpi, and for having a beautiful blue sheen across the upper surface of the wings. Rhetus are closely allied to Ancyluris and have a very similar wing shape. In Ancyluris however there is a blue iridescence on the underside of the wings, but not on the upperside. There are 3 Rhetus species, of which periander is the commonest and most widespread. The others are arcius, which is paler, with longer, thinner tails; and dysonii, in which the pink markings on the hindwings are of a different configuration. Rhetus periander is usually found singly or in very low numbers, in the vicinity of streams or rivers. It can be also be found along tracks through primary or disturbed rainforest or cloudforest habitats. The butterfly occurs at elevations between 0-1800m, and flies throughout the year.

They inhabit high-altitude forests and are known for their graceful flight. The caterpillars feed on Aristolochia plants. The species is prized by collectors and faces threats from habitat loss and over-collection. Conservation efforts are being made to protect their habitats.
07. Blue Morpho Butterfly
As its common name implies, the blue morpho butterfly’s wings are bright blue, edged with black. The blue morpho is among the largest butterflies in the world, with wings spanning from five to eight inches. Their vivid, iridescent blue coloring is a result of the microscopic scales on the backs of their wings, which reflect light. The underside of the morpho’s wings, on the other hand, is a dull brown color with many eyespots, providing camouflage against predators such as birds and insects when its wings are closed. When the blue morpho flies, the contrasting bright blue and dull brown colors flash, making it look like the morpho is appearing and disappearing. The males’ wings are broader than those of the females and appear to be brighter in color.
