OutRun 2 stays true to the race format laid down by the 1986 original, in which the player drives a Ferrari sports car with a young lady in the passenger seat through 5 of 15 stages. As before, the player can choose their course and the soundtrack.
OutRun 2 takes this basic concept and expands on it. As well as the Testarossa of the original, seven other Ferraris are driveable, thanks to an official Ferrari license. Each car has different handling characteristics, but the eight cars are sorted into four groups based on difficulty — novice, expert, a lower intermediate group of cars with better handling and higher top speed, and a higher intermediate group of cars with better acceleration.
The soundtrack has also been broadened. The original's three tracks are present, rendered in broader, more realistic instrumentation than the older versions. In addition to the original three, four more tracks are available, with styles ranging from instrumental rock to upbeat ballad. The original 1986 music is also available.
Finally, the game received a complete graphical overhaul with 3D graphics and fully rendered environments. It was also given a network connection system, allowing multiplayer races.
Following in a similar footsteps to the Turbo OutRun update over the original OutRun, OutRun 2 SP has a new set of fifteen stages set over the Americas, though continues to include the fifteen European-inspired stages from the original OutRun 2. It also adds two new cars, alongside the returning eight models.
Also similar to Turbo OutRun is the reintroduction of "rivals"; other Ferraris that appear along the course with more dynamic movement than standard traffic. Unlike Turbo OutRun you are not strictly "racing" these vehicles and so are not punished for finishing behind them; they just are pace-setters and obstacles.
There have also been some physics improvements, and an updated user interface, more clearly labelling the easy and hard routes for new players, and explaining how scores are calculated.
The game has now 5 Game modes:
Outrun Mode is basically the rules of the original OutRun game — the player drives through 5 of 15 stages, selecting them en route. As before, there is a time limit which is extended when the player passes checkpoints.
Heart Attack Mode is Outrun Mode with a twist. As well as driving the open-ended course to the time limit, the passenger will frequently request certain stunts and actions. These requests, carried out through marked sections of the course, can include passing cars, drifting around bends, driving through marked lanes, knocking over cones, and simply not crashing into anything for as long as possible. If successfully done, the player will receive hearts and, at the end of the request section, will be graded on their performance. The player's performance is also graded at the end of the stage. Crashing into the scenery at any time will result in the player losing hearts. Should the player reach a goal with a satisfying grade, a more romantic ending is displayed.
Time Attack Mode has the player race a 'ghost' car over a pre-selected course to the time limit. Time checks are presented to the player at various points on each stage.
Outrun Mode 15 Continuous Course, in this mode instead of playing five stages of a course and selecting the next one via a fork in the road, the player instead drives through all 15 stages of the chosen course in a pre-determined order, stages all harder with heavy traffic.
The aforementioned forks in the road still exist, but now both lead to the same location.
Time Attack Mode 15 Continuous Course same has the Outrun one,but this without opponents and competing for time against car ghosts.
OutRun 2 SP SDX follows a tradition of Sega introducing larger versions of their arcade racing games for certain venues, a practise that can be dated back to Virtua Formula in 1993.
This version of OutRun 2 SP runs on Sega Lindbergh hardware, and makes use of large moving cockpits designed to resemble cars by Ferrari (the F50 (red), Dino 246GTS (yellow), 360 Spider (blue) and 512 BB (silver)), which tilt with the on-screen action. All four cars are selectable in-game, but players are not forced to use them.
Each cockpit also includes two steering wheels, allowing for cooperative play, in which two players sitting next to each other take turns driving with their own set of controls. The cabinets also feature cameras which monitor players and a live leaderboard so guests can see the results from behind.
Content-wise OutRun 2 SP SDX is otherwise a match for OutRun 2 SP, to the point where they are often classified as the same game.
