"I am pleased to participate this morning in the first process of destruction of drugs in 2023, seized by the National Police of Peru due to their efficient and professional work, which starts from a firm and clear political decision at the highest level. We are talking about more than 14 tons of drugs seized from late November 2022 until the first week of February 2023."

STORYLINE:
President Dina Boluarte accompanied by several ministers and other high government authorities, witnessed on Tuesday in Peru’s capital the incineration of 14 tons of drugs seized from the end of November through the first week of February.
Boluarte called the production and consumption of illegal drugs one of the biggest scourges facing Peru, align with poverty, inequality, and corruption.
“For decades, (it) has been destroying our children, our youth, our families, and our society," she said.
She said that in the coming days, a National Security Council would convene to adopt urgent, concrete, and drastic measures against common and organized crime.
Interior Minister Vicente Romero announced that his office has the goal of destroying this year 21,000 hectares of illegal coca leaf crops distributed in different parts of the country.
Authorities said 14 tons of illegal drugs incinerated included cocaine hydrochloride, basic coca paste, basic coca paste with mixture, cannabis, latex, and opium latex.
Romero said the seized drugs were to be marketed in Mexico and European countries and that the criminal organizations "have suffered a hard blow."
