রোমান প্রজাতন্ত্র প্রায় ১৪০০ বছর ধরে প্রচলিত ছিল। এর প্রথম দুই শতক রাজনৈতিক সুস্থরতা এবং সমৃদ্ধির কারণে এদের “রোমান শান্তি”র যুগ হিসেবে অভিহিত করা হয়। অক্টেভিয়ানের বিজয়ের পর রোমান সাম্রাজ্যের পরিসর নাটকীয়ভাবে সম্প্রসারিত হয়। ৪১ সালে কেলিগুলার হত্যার পর সিনেটে পুনরায় প্রজাতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠার কথা বিবেচনা করা হয়। কিন্তু ইতিমধ্যে প্রেইটোরিয়ান দেহরক্ষী বাহিনী ক্লডিয়াসকে সম্রাট ঘোষণা করে। ক্লডিয়াসের নেতৃত্বে রোমানরা ব্রিটানিয়াকে নিজ সাম্রাজ্যের অন্তর্গত করে। অক্টেভিয়ানের পর এটাই ছিল সর্ববৃহৎ রাজ্য বিস্তারের ঘটনা। ক্লডিয়াসের পরবর্তী সম্রাট নীরো ৬৮ সালে আত্মহত্যা করার পর পুনরায় রাজনৈতিক অস্থিরতার উদ্ভব হয়। গৃহযুদ্ধ এবং বিদ্রোহের (ইহুদী-রোমান যুদ্ধ) সময় চারজন সেনাধ্যক্ষক সম্রাট ঘোষণা করা হয়। ৬৯ সালে ভেসপাসিয়ানে বিজয় লাভ করে এবং ফ্লেভিয়ান রাজবংশের প্রতিষ্ঠা করে। তার পুত্র পরবর্তী সম্রাট টাইটাসে রোমের বিখ্যাত কলোসিয়াম নির্মাণ করে। টাইটাসের অল্প সময়ের রাজত্যের পর তার ভাই ডমিটিয়ান রোমান সিংহাসনে আরোহণ করে এবং দীর্ঘকাল রাজত্বের পর হত্যার বলি হয়। এরপর সিনেট পাঁচজন সম্রাটকে বাছাই করে। এর দ্বিতীয় সম্রাট ট্রাজানের শাসনামলে রোমান সাম্রাজ্য সর্বোচ্চ শিখরে উন্নীত হয়।
