I had the rare opportunity to experience both the fully resonated and semi/half-resonated Milltek Sport catback exhaust systems on my 2017 Ford Focus ST Mk3 (ST250).
Coupled with the fact that there are very few high-quality videos of these kinds of exhausts online (despite how expensive they are), I tried my best to capture each one - hopefully this helps others who are considering similar systems for their cars.
I originally ordered the semi-resonated Milltek system as a replacement for the very lacking stock Ford exhaust. I wanted a nice middle-ground between exhaust character and sensibility!
However due to some communication errors between the garage who fitted the system and Milltek themselves, the fully-resonated system was installed on the car.
I then had to wait a couple of weeks for the semi-resonated system to be shipped and installed - hence the quite strange scenario of being able to experience and compare both on my own car!
For those who don’t know: the fully-resonated Milltek system for the Focus has three silencers - front, centre and the back box. The semi-resonated system deletes the front silencer, replacing it with a section of pipe. As you can tell from the video, this makes a substantial difference to the sound of the exhaust.
I was really underwhelmed when we first started the car up, thinking that it was the semi-resonated system. Other than how it looked (amazing), it was honestly hardly any different to stock, and certainly not worth the cost! But when we realised the wrong system had been fitted and eventually swapped it out for the semi-resonated system, I was over the moon with the difference,
I’m yet to experience the non-resonated system in person (although that will change soon, so perhaps there’s another video to be made for that…), but my first impressions of the semi-resonated system are that it’s an excellent middle-ground. The engine finally has some audible character, yet it’s not obnoxious or ear-shatteringly loud.
Inside the car, it’s not immensely different to stock as I still have the sound symposer installed. There is a very noticeable bassy “boom” at the lower end of the rev range (in a good way!). Of course, under load is where the exhaust really comes alive, yet it remains very sensible and comfortable for motorway cruising or pottering around town.
Like I say, I hope this video helps in some way. If you have your own Focus exhaust experiences or questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments below!
