Su historia comienza el 2 de julio de 1919 en el recinto Playas de Vinces, cantón Vinces, donde nace bajo los nombres de Olimpo León Cárdenas Moreira. Huérfano de padre y madre desde sus 3 años.
Fue criado por su madrina que le inculcó el amor por la música popular. De muchacho, viviendo ya en Guayaquil, veía películas mexicanas para tararear las canciones que interpretaban Lorenzo Barcelata y Tito Guizar, soñando con algún día ser como ellos.
Sus amigos lo incitaron a presentarse en programas radiales de cantantes aficionados como 'Tío Pepe' en la Voz del Litoral y 'La Corte Suprema del Arte' de RCE (Radiodifusora del Ecuador), donde cantando tangos de Carlos Gardel y Agustín Magaldi ganó el derecho a actuar los domingos en el American Park.
Fue en esos tiempos que Olimpo Cárdenas acudió a Carlos Rubira Infante para aprender a interpretar música nacional. "Me pidió que le enseñara pasillos -recordó Rubira en una entrevista que le hice años atrás- porque no conocía los ritmos. Conmigo después cantó hasta yaraví. Y nada más. He sido amigo, no he sido maestro de nadie".
Ambos en 1946 integraron el dúo Cárdenas-Rubira y grabaron el recordado pasillo En las lejanías. Cárdenas, a partir de 1950, formó parte del trío Los Trovadores y durante tres años recorrió el país a bordo de buses, taxis y trenes. "Me enfrenté a toda clase de públicos y fue entonces cuando decidí ampliar mis horizontes, triunfar en el extranjero", contaría años después al cronista colombiano Humberto Vinasco Rojas.
En 1954 con Pepe Jaramillo y Plutarco Uquillas forma el Trío Emperador. Llegan a Cali y se presentan en programas radiales. Pero todo cambió cuando son escuchados en Discos Victoria y Mario Méndez, propietario de esa empresa discográfica, discretamente le ofrece a Cárdenas un contrato como solista.
Esa noche, Olimpo se lo cuenta a sus compañeros que sintiéndose traicionados, lo despiden con una paliza. "Fue la tunda que me lanzó al éxito. Allí nació el Olimpo Cárdenas que se conoce hasta hoy", reflexionaría años después.
Con el sello Discos Victoria su primer sencillo en Colombia con el vals peruano Fatalidad y el pasillo del compositor manabita Julio César Villafuerte: Tu duda y la mía, que años después, por aquellas jugadas del destino, sería la última canción de su vida.
En Colombia comenzaron sus presentaciones en centros nocturnos y teatros, sus discos se escuchan por todas partes. Después graba Lágrimas de amor, Temeridad y Nuestro juramento que serán éxitos en diversos países como México, donde en 1957, se quedó durante más de 10 años.
Ahí grabó 20 discos de larga duración y triunfó en plazas de toros, coliseos, teatros y clubes nocturnos.
Durante su carrera artística Cárdenas se presentó en escenarios de toda América y el Caribe. Una noche podía cantar en el Manhattan Center de Nueva York (EE.UU.), el Teatro Blanquita de México, y otras en cabarés de cortinas y luces rojas.
En 1970 regresó a Colombia -que adoptó como segunda patria-, residiendo en Bogotá. Y aunque ya no ocupaba los primeros puestos de popularidad, sus discos -cerca de 70 long play y unas 750 canciones- seguían vendiéndose y el público siéndole fiel.
Según algunos la vigencia de Olimpo Cárdenas reside en que sus canciones están íntimamente emparentadas con la tristeza y la nostalgia.
Tanto así que redactores de crónica roja, varias veces culparon a sus canciones de suicidios de gente desesperada. 'Lo mató Olimpo Cárdenas', fue el titular de un diario después de un suicidio. "Si por mi culpa se suicidan tantos, y esto lo castigara la ley, yo tendría más cárcel que si hubiera asesinado siete obispos", comentó una vez.
Según anotación de Oswaldo Carrión en Lo mejor del Siglo XX. Música Ecuatoriana la última vez que Cárdenas cantó en Ecuador fue en Radio Cristal, el 8 de marzo de 1991, a escasos meses de su desaparición. El 28 de julio de 1991, Olimpo Cárdenas tenía 72 años a cuestas y un rostro marcado por noches de desvelo. Sus canciones y voz eran reconocidas tanto por humildes obreros como por personas adineradas.
Esa tarde de domingo, el maestro de ceremonia de la Feria Ganadera de Tulúa, Colombia, anunció a la figura central del evento: "Y con ustedes, el inigualable... Olimpo Cárdenas... el Rey del Estilo".
Él apagó el trigésimo cigarrillo de ese día, vestido de blanco subió al escenario y agradeció por los aplausos. Las guitarras entonaron Tu duda y la mía, y empezó a cantar: "Si es verdad lo que me dices,/ que tu amor tan solo es mío,/ no comprendo por qué tardas, en unirte junto a mí./ Si es que alguna duda tienes, o quizás ya no me quieres..." y se desplomó fulminado por un ataque al corazón. Ese día, Olimpo Cárdenas, murió cantando en el escenario, como algunos cantantes románticos sueñan terminar. Pero su voz y sus canciones siguen vivas como un corazón que no cesa de latir y cantar.
