In C – The Corona Version from Sweden
In March 2020, Swedish musicians, as with those throughout the world, found themselves unable to work together or perform with their regular orchestras and ensembles. As a result of this new situation, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra took the initiative to create a new version of Terry Riley’s minimalistic and improvisational masterpiece ‘In C’. Representing a wide range of genres, our version of ‘In C’, unites musicians from all over Sweden, symbolising cooperation, creativity and optimism during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In C is a musical piece composed by Terry Riley (1935-) in 1964 for an indefinite number of performers. He suggests "a group of about 35 is desired if possible but smaller or larger groups will work". A series of short melodic fragments, In C is often cited as the first minimalist composition that got a significant impact on public consciousness. The piece was first performed at the San Francisco Tape Music Center and it received its first recorded release in 1968 on CBS Records. Subsequent performances have been recorded many times since.
This is our version.
