Everyone has a different voice and therefore a different vocal range. Some people are more comfortable singing in chest voice, while others are more comfortable singing in head voice. If you are trying to sing a song that just doesn’t work with your voice, adjusting the song’s key to your voice’s range may just fix that problem. If you don’t know what your range of voice is, there are countless exercises that not only show you your range, but also help in strengthening your limits and expanding your range. In this video from the Berklee Online course Improvisation Techniques for Singing Pop and R&B, author Gabrielle Goodman teaches you how to find your range, and through a piano exercise even demonstrates the amazing range of Mariah Carey. She also demonstrates how to change keys in songs like “At Last” by Etta James and “Sweet Love” by Anita Baker.

ABOUT GABRIELLE GOODMAN:
Gabrielle Goodman is a professor in the Voice department at Berklee College of Music. Well-versed in jazz, R&B, classical, and gospel, she has performed with Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Nancy Wilson, and Roberta Flack, who calls Goodman “one of the finest singers around today.” She won an ASCAP Songwriting Award for “You Can Make the Story Right,” a song she co-wrote with Chaka Khan. Gabrielle has performed in both classical and jazz idioms with the Syracuse Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Baltimore Opera, and the National Symphony. Her theatrical appearances include Maya Angelou’s gospel/opera “King” and the Canadian production of “Ain’t Misbehavin.”
