Clint plays Captain Dennis Bourke, the leader of an American group of soldiers who crash land in an island during World War II. Already on the island is a Japanese platoon also marooned there. Being mortal enemies because of the war, they fight and both suffer casualties, but later they find that cooperating with each other to survive is better; the Americans share medicine and cigarettes while the Japanese do the fishing and share the water. Still, loyalty to their respective countries must prevail in the end. In this scene Frank Sinatra, the Chief Pharmacist Mate, tells the Japanese leader about Captain Bourke and how he preferred the military over marriage and what a deep regret that is to him. This was Frank Sinatra's debut as director and the message he gives at the very end is "nobody wins" A very touching and sombering story with the ever beautiful Clint Walker.
