Test-taking is a skill. Some of the smartest people I know tell me "I'm just not a good test-taker." Some people get test anxiety. Unfortunately, test anxiety and poor test-taking skills can lower your performance on an exam even when you know the material very well. In medical training programs like PA school, medical school, and nursing school, we are tested frequently. We are tested to make sure we are knowledgeable, which keeps our future patients safe. However, this testing is not perfect and sometimes it tests your ability to take the actual test more than how much knowledge you actually have. This is where test-taking strategies come in.
One thing every medical, PA, and nursing student will be familiar with is the vignette question. This is a long question with many details about a patient. These questions can be overwhelming and time-consuming, and definitely stress-inducing.
In this video, I discuss my strategy for handling these vignette-type questions. Following this system reduces test anxiety because you know that you are going to handle every question the same way. You have a strategy. You have that stability and comfort in knowing that you will treat every question the same. This strategy also allows you to save time and energy, which is especially helpful for those of us who are slow readers.
