Susan Brownell Anthony was a pioneer leader in the fight for women’s suffrage, and she worked tirelessly for what she considered to be in the best interests of womankind. In 1878, Susan submitted a proposed amendment to Congress to gain the right to vote, but women didn’t win that right or hold elective office until August 26, 1920.
The American Women’s Suffrage Movement stands as a lasting affirmation of our country’s democratic promise for it re-emphasizes the importance of the most fundamental democratic values: the right to vote, and the possibility of peaceful yet revolutionary political change.
In 1971, Congress enacted Women’s Equality Day to celebrate the passage of the 19th Amendment, and to call attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.
