Nature-based Solutions (NbS) address societal challenges through actions to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems which address social, economic and environmental challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being, ecosystem services, resilience and biodiversity. They target major challenges like climate change, disaster risk reduction, food and water security, biodiversity loss and human health, and are critical to sustainable development. The design, implementation, and assessment of NbS are supported by the IUCN Global Standard for NbS, which helps users shape their solutions and make them truly effective through 8 criteria and 28 indicators, supported by guiding questions.
This three-hour webinar provided a complete overview of NbS and IUCN NbS Standard, introducing the framework, and presenting the objectives and outcomes of implementing NbS, and common factors for successful implementation of NbS. A space was dedicated to exploring the IUCN NbS online self-assessment tool, which facilitates the design and implementation of NbS. Three case studies were presented, to illustrate the implementation process with hands-on experiences, and sharing of challenges and perspectives. An open discussion took place.
This webinar, organised in the frame of the RESCOM - Call for Small Projects from the Mediterranean Biodiversity Consortium, was addressed to anyone interested in deepening their knowledge on Nature-based Solutions, and especially to the candidate CSOs planning to submit a project proposal in response to the Call.
