(11 May 1976) Rhodesian nationalist leader Joshua Nkomo speaking at press conference where he said the war would continue until there was black rule in the country
lead in: rhodesian nationalist leader joshua told a news conference in nairobi, kenya, on monday (may 10th) that the fighting in his country would continue until there was rule by the black majority. he was speaking before leaving on a tour that will take him to uganda and via london to europe and west africa. the trip is to tell the world how his talks with rhodesian prime minister ian smith broke down. nkomo said the problem could be ended by talks, but added that all wars ended at the conference table.
commentary: nkomo stressed that britain was responsible for finding a solution. nkomo: "we don't talk of compromise. we cannot compromise with people's rights. it is not a question of compromise. what we want is an answer to the problem. that is majority rule, and self-determination for the people of zimbabwe. there is no compromise in that. it is a clear, straightforward affair. it is this or nothing. this is the position. now, as to whether britain can help. no, don't talk about britain helping. britain couldn't help anybody. britain has her duty; they had their duty and they still have it. they colonised that country and if it was not for their kith and kin type of attitude, they would have done what they did to the other colonies. but because they give some undertaking that that country was a white country, whatever they meant by that. right in the centre of africa, you get people saying this is a country for white people. this racism; white people, white people, white people. we dont talk about white people or black people. we talk aboutpeople. britain is responsible for this and if no one wants britain to help, britain must do a job. if she doesn't do her job, the people of zimbabwe are doing their job, as they have been doing for the past twenty five years."
