Learn all about astronomy and the best ways to see the stars in our Stargazing Scotland video series. In this week's stargazing instalment, we teach you about signposts in the sky and how you can navigate the stars.
Looking up at the night sky, you might be wondering: 'what stars can I see and what do they mean?' Historically, people used stars as directional signs and to tell tales of beliefs, mythology or experiences.
With help from this week's Stargazing in Scotland episode, you'll learn to interpret the cosmos and uncover the secrets of the stars.
Find out more about constellations - groups of visible stars that form an outline or shape that resembles a mythological creature, animal or object. Records of the earliest constellations go back to prehistoric times, showing that people have always been fascinated by the night sky.
To get started, keep an eye out for Ursa Major, known as the 'Plough' or 'Big Dipper', a constellation made of seven bright stars. This will lead you to the North Star, a natural compass that sits above the North Pole.
