In Kenya, pig farming is the fastest growing sector all thanks to the high demand for pig products within the country and across the world. On todays episode we visited a pig farm in Uashin Gishu county where Jared Moegi took us through pig farming in a small space.
Just like any other livestock, proper housing and management of animal facilities, are essential to the pig’s well being.
In this farm, they specialize in the large white pig breed. This breed is known for having high quality bacon and pork. A mature boar weighs between 350-380 kg while mature sows vary from 260-300kg. The sows are known for excellent maternal instincts, large litters and high milk production. This animals are also very good for crossbreeding.
Pigs consume a variety of feeds including grains, forages and non meat kitchen left overs. For this farm, the pigs are given feeds that give them energy and protein. Protein plays an important role since it facilitates growth, milk production and body maintenance. They are also given additional supplements to ensure that the pigs get the necessary nutrients.
The age of the pig is a huge factor that influences the amount of feed the pigs are given. three month old's and below are usually given half a kg of feed. When the piglets turn 4 months to 6 months the feed is increased to 1 kg. Above 6 months they are given 1.5kg - 2kg. For better output, they are feed in the morning and evening.
Pigs should have access to clean drinking water. Water controls metabolic functions, Adjusts body temperature, promotes milk production and also plays a big role in promoting growth.
