Be on your guard against scammers around Black Friday and Cyber Monday - this time of year, and the run up to Christmas, is a hot bed for scammers. ⛔️🛍️💰
Here are some top tips to stay safe:
1. Read reviews
If you’ve never heard of a company, or you’re worried whether it’s a scam, you can search online for reviews. Try Trustpilot, which makes it easy to search by the company’s name. You can then click on the worst reviews and you’ll soon have an idea whether it’s a fraudulent company or not.
2. Look for the padlock
If you go to a retailer’s website like this one, the padlock sign tells you the website has a security certificate. Before you buy something online, check the website is secure.
3. Don’t click on suspicious links
If you receive a suspicious email, check the email address it’s come from and if there are links in the email, see if they look valid. Here I could see that the email and link looks dodgy and spells the word refund incorrectly - a red flag, so ignored.
4. Avoid shopping on social media
Shoppers seeking bargains are being targeted by scammers who have built fake websites for some of the most popular brands, and are advertising discounts on social media. Be on your guard.
5. Don’t share personal info
It’s generally best practice to avoid sharing your personal information online. This includes information like your date of birth and account number. Stop and think before sharing any personal information!
