At 6.10pm pm on 7 August 2018, Kauvery Hospital in Chennai declares the death of the DMK patriarch, M Karunanidhi. The doctors and nurses at Kauvery Hospital tried their best to resuscitate him but the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu failed to respond. The hospital further said that they are deeply mourning for the loss of one of the greatest leaders. His has led to the breakdown of most of members of DMK.
The Chief Minister’s first visit to the hospital was on 18 July 2018 for a tracheotomy tube change. Then he was admitted at Kauvery Hospital on July 28, 2018. He was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. His clue to rush to the hospital was when his fever spiked all of a sudden. The doctors advised the 94-year-old to stay in the hospital. He was in the hospital for over a week, and with every passing day his situation was just worsening. There were several age-related ailments that the doctors had to keep an eye open for, and to maintain his vital organs was a challenge to the best faculty of the hospital. The fluctuations in his deteriorating health were because he had also contracted jaundice in addition to the problems he was facing in breathing normally.
Since then, several political leaders had visited him in the hospital. This includes Congress’s chief- Rahul Gandhi, President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkiah Naidu. Actor-politicians like Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth had also gone to meet the former chief minister and they hoped for his speedy recovery.
Lately, he had lived a secluded life and had not made any public appearance. The only exception was when he made occasional visits to his office.
Upon hearing the news of his deteriorating health, many DMK members came rushing towards the hospital. They were stopped by the police forces and were denied to go anywhere close to the hospital. Barricades and ropes had to be brought in in order to stop the emotional supporters from breaking through.
